Compatibility with pre-established uses of the sea

The activities to be carried out in the test bed area must be compatible with other uses of the marine environment established beforehand. An exhaustive study has been conducted to identify the activities that were already on-going in the area.

Protected natural areas

The test bed area is not included in any protected natural area. The closest Special Conservation Area (SCA) to the test bed is 4km to the north, declared an SCA due to the presence of dolphins and turtles.

Shipping traffic

From a shipping point of view, the test bed area does not interfere with the main shipping routes, although there is frequent traffic of recreational and fishing boats.

Underwater cables

There are two telecommunications cables to the north of the test bed that have been left out of the reserve area in order to avoid any interaction or constraints on the activities to be carried out.

Recreational diving area

The wreck of the Arona is within the test bed area. This is a merchant ship that sunk in 1972 to the sea bed at a depth of 35 metres. This wreck is included in the recreational diving guides and is visited by divers throughout the year.

Air safety zone

The test bed falls within the aeronautical easements of the airport of Gran Canaria. This means that there are height limits on any infrastructure installed there, such as off-shore wind turbines for instance. Specifically, the maximum height allowed in the test bed area for any installation is 160 metres and we already have authorisation for this from the National Air Safety Agency (AESA).

Restricted areas

The test bed falls outside of any restricted area, such as areas for military manoeuvres, located to the north and south of the test bed, as shown in the figure below.

Artisanal fishing

The test bed area falls within an area of artisanal fishing activity by the Co-operatives of Melenara and San Cristobal. The activities engaged in within the test bed area will be compatible with this fishing activity.
